Seth Lerer (born 1955) is an American scholar and Professor of English. He specializes in historical analyses of the English language, and in addition to critical analyses of the works of several authors, particularly Geoffrey Chaucer.

Seth Lerer joined the Literature Department in January 2009 as Distinguished Professor and as Dean of Arts and Humanities. His teaching and research address Medieval and Renaissance Literature, the History of the English Language, Children’s Literature, and the history of the book.

Seth Lerer joined the Literature department as a visiting professor of Literature in January 2024. In a career of over 40 years, he has taught at Princeton University, Stanford University, and the University of California, San Diego, where he also served as Dean of Arts and Humanities.

Dr. Seth Lerer is the Dean of Arts and Humanities at the University of California, San Diego. Before taking this position, he was the Avalon Foundation Professor in Humanities and Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Stanford University.
