Vitellaria paradoxa (formerly Butyrospermum parkii), commonly known as shea tree, shi tree (/ ˈ ʃ iː (ə)/, also / ʃ eɪ / [2] [3]), or vitellaria, is a tree of the family Sapotaceae. It is the only species in the genus Vitellaria , [ 4 ] and is indigenous to Africa .

Gaertn.) is an important tree species in agroforestry systems in West Africa and shea nuts constitute a fundamental resource for rural livelihoods in this area. This study investigated the sustainability and interactions in agroforestry systems of shea trees around the village Nakpalli in Northern Ghana.

The shea tree grows in the dry savannah environments found in a number of countries across the middle of Africa. However, this critical tree is now under threat from excessive logging and habitat loss. In a good year, one shea tree can produce up to 50kg of fruit.
