Walking around Shela village, photographer Roland Klemp, and Lamu resident and arts patron Herbert Menzer were struck time and again by the sight of men labouring away under the shade of strange headgear. No ubiquitous construction hard hats in Lamu. Instead, each worker sports a unique, and often funny-looking, handmade creation.

Inspired by the creativity of local workers protecting from the sun with very original, hand made head covers. Shela Hat Contest became an opportunity to let the imagination run wild and create authentic pieces of art with any available material found on Lamu island. Every other two years since 2010, the unbelievable creativity of ordinary Kenyans comes alive for the public during the biannual Shela Hat Contest that happened again on 29th of February 2020 on legendary Peponi beach. This year was no exception except the public witnessed more imagination, creativity, enthusiasm and originality than ever before.

Started in 2010, the Shela Hat contest takes place on Peponi beach in Lamu giving locals a chance to show off their creativity as they parade their uniquely hand crafted sun hats. There is no limit to the ingenuity of the contestants as they make use of the material available on the island, be it old cement bags, pieces of coral, shells, palm ...
