Singapore Airlines Flight 006 was an international scheduled passenger flight from Singapore Changi Airport to Los Angeles International Airport via Chiang Kai-shek International Airport (now known as Taoyuan International Airport) near Taipei, Taiwan.

However, for 39 years, the Boeing 747 was a staple of the Singapore Airlines passenger fleet, first flying with the airline in 1973.

Singapore Airlines has been in operation since 1972, and operates a predominantly widebody fleet, until the second re-introduction of the Boeing 737 in March 2021 following the merger with SilkAir. The airline also operates Boeing 747-400F and Boeing 777F freighters.

2024年5月3日 · Perhaps the most well known aircraft name in the Singapore Airlines fleet belongs to the airline’s large Boeing 747-400 fleet. With ‘BIG TOP’ already used, it was ‘MEGATOP’ chosen for what became by far SIA’s largest long-haul fleet of aircraft in the 1990s and 2000s.

2023年7月16日 · In December 1989, following delivery of its fifth Boeing 747-400, Singapore Airlines commenced regular MEGATOP flights to the USA. The new jumbos replaced Boeing 747-300s on the ‘flagship’ (SQ1/2) daily Singapore – Hong Kong – San Francisco service. This allowed SIA to cut out the Honolulu stop on that routing from 8th January 1990.

2019年6月9日 · Singapore Airlines’ final 747-400 to be delivered, 9V-SPQ, left Singapore’s Changi Airport as flight SQ747 at 8.30am after a series of celebratory events at Gate B7, Terminal 3. The flight arrived in Hong Kong at 1.20pm before the aircraft operated return flight SQ748, which touched down in Singapore at 7.39pm.

In the 1980s, Singapore Airlines started operating the Boeing 747-400, allowing it to finally fly non-stop flights from Singapore to London. The previous 747s in SIA, the 747-300s, were named "Big Top". As the -400 had a larger upper deck than its older variant, SIA christened it "Megatop".

Flight SQ747 from Singapore to Hong Kong and SQ748 from Hong Kong to Singapore will be operated with the B747-400, replacing existing flights SQ860 and SQ863, which are normally operated with Airbus A330-300s. The special flights, which will be SIA’s last commercial passenger services with the B747, are now open for sale.
