1967: Sierra Madre Historical Society begins sponsoring annual bus tours of the town’s historical buildings. 1967: Sierra Madre becomes the first city in Southern California to own a wilderness preserve. 1967: Princess Margaret visits the British Home.
The Planning Commission helps plan for growth and development in Sierra Madre by advising on long-range goals, policies and programs on a broad array of issues related to land use, modification to and administration of zoning regulations, historical preservation and review of other programs and projects which affect city development.
Sierra Madre cannot require any agency to agree to automatic aid. Historically, Sierra Madre was not a participating member in automatic aid for Fire because the City relied on the services of a volunteer fire force.
Currently Sierra Madre’s total pension liability is $10,678,000 and the City is approximately 75% funded. Sierra Madre, like all California cities, pays down its pension liability with a charge known as an Unfunded Accrued Liability (UAL).
The most significant earthquake in the City of Sierra Madre was the Sierra Madre Earthquake. At 7:43 a.m. on June 28, 1991 this 5.8 earthquake struck. The epicenter was 7.5 miles northeast of Sierra Madre and damage totaled $12.5 million.
Parkway Tree Trimming - In an effort to consistently maintain the City of Sierra Madre's tree-lined streets the Public Works Department provides tree trimming on a rotating schedule.
