2012年10月3日 · The Mercury astronauts didn't design or wear mission patches as later flight crews would, but working with RCA artist Cece Bibby, logos were added to the spacecraft. Here Bibby hand paints Schirra's "Sigma 7" insignia on the Mercury capsule.

In 1959, he became one of the original seven astronauts chosen for Project Mercury, which was the United States' first effort to put humans into space. On October 3, 1962, he flew the six-orbit, nine-hour, Mercury-Atlas 8 mission, in a spacecraft he nicknamed Sigma 7, becoming the fifth American and ninth human to travel into space.

This capsule carried Wally Schirra. It is covered by plastic making photography difficult and is tipped on it's side to expose the heat-shield. The hatch-opening is also covered with plastic. 2010年6月29日 · Sigma 7. Schirra named his capsule Sigma 7 to reflect the engineering focus of his mission. Sigma is a mathematical symbol for summation. To Schirra, the symbol represented engineering excellence, and it also reflected the fact that his mission built on the work and experience of previous missions.
