In contrast to HIV-infected humans, these natural SIV hosts typically do not develop AIDS, despite chronic infection with a highly replicating virus.

During SIV infection of RMs, damage to the mucosal barrier of the GI tract is associated with microbial translocation and ensuing immune activation (Estes et al. 2010). In natural infection, preservation of mucosal immune function and of the tight epithelial barrier of the GI tract appears to prevent microbial translocation from occurring.
