The abolition of slavery in France was enacted with the Decree abolishing Slavery of 27 April 1848 . In particular Martinique was the first French overseas territory in which the decree for the abolition of slavery actually came into force, on 23 May 1848.

Though the Portuguese and British dominated the transatlantic slave trade, the French were the third largest slave traders, elevated to that rank by the staggering numbers of Africans delivered to Saint-Domingue (Haiti) in the late eighteenth century.

The National Convention declares slavery abolished throughout all the colonies: consequently, it decrees that all men, without distinction of color, domiciliated in the colonies, are French citizens, and entitled to the enjoyment of all the rights secured by the Constitution.

Victor Schœlcher and the Second Republic permanently abolished slavery in France and the colonies on April 27, 1848. With a strong involvement in the slave trade and in colonial commerce, Nantes was not at the forefront of the abolitionist struggle.
