It is *extremely* common. Great Horned Owls can carry up to 10 lbs. If your dog is only 5 lbs, it can be carried off the second your back's turned. They'll also carry off cats, kittens, and puppies, too. If you have roof rats, though, these guys are your friends. Male owls will work twice as hard if they're trying to set up a territory.
