Joseph is a young red shelled Koopa Paratroopa, formerly a regular Koopa-Troopa with a green shell (which later became human along with his friends). Due to his wings, it is suggested that he became a turtle-bird hybrid, as he gained the ability to fly after he requested for a new shell with wings when he broke his shell.
