This is a version of the British Mk II Sten submachine-gun, modified during the Second World War in the workshops of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) at Welwyn. The compact size of submachine-guns and the relatively low power of their ammunition (compared with rifles) made them highly suitable for silencing for use in clandestine operations.
