The R rating is the most common of the MPA ratings in cinemas. It means: Restricted - Under 17 Requires Accompanying Parent or Adult Guardian. It was established with the system.

Starting in 2004, the MPAA URL is added next to the Film Ratings URL. (Excluding Paramount Global and Sony Group Corporation versions) Some of the early versions have the Film Ratings URL centered, while others have it off-center to the left. The early variants were used in tandem with the MPAA URL variant.

An R-rated motion picture may include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements, so that parents are counseled to take this rating very seriously. Children under 17 are not allowed to attend R-rated motion pictures unaccompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

On some R-rated trailers, the words "This Preview has been Approved by the Motion Picture Association of America for General Audiences." is shown on top of the bumper, and all text except for the rating symbol is in Helvetica. Sometimes, the word "Preview" is entirely in uppercase.

The Comcast Corporation/Universal Pictures version strictly uses the Helvetica font from the previous idents instead of the Gotham font used by Sony Group Corporation/Sony Pictures and Disney/20th Century Studios on home video releases, and by Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment in movie theaters, but still uses the same rating design as the ...
