This SOPEP accomplishes that by providing the following: • Procedures to report an oil pollution incident • Coastal State Contacts and Port Contact Lists to be contacts in the event of an Oil Pollution Incident • Response actions to reduce or control the discharge of oil following an incident

Regulation 37 of MARPOL Annex I requires that oil tankers of 150 gross tonnage and above and all ships of 400 gross tonnage and above carry an approved Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (SOPEP). Article 3 of the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation, 1990, also requires such a plan for certain ships.

Regulation 37 of MARPOL Annex I, as amended by Resolution MEPC 117(52), requires every oil tanker of 150 GT and above and every ship other than an oil tanker of 400 GT and above to carry an oil pollution emergency plan approved by the Administration. For new ships the rule became effective on 4 April 1993.
