SOU refurbished their “Local Service” Gantt-built cabooses in the late 1970s, as radio use became more prevalent and electric red marker lights needed to be added to the ends. SOU’s innovative approach resulted in Solar panels being added to the top of the roof to charge a battery system on the prototypes.

SOU North Charlotte District men called it "Cowboy's Hill". "Cowboy" worked at night for the Isenhour Brick Plant, firing brick and running a little store next to the track. SOU crews would stop at the store to get drinks and snacks and talk to "Cowboy" before switching the brick plant and descending "Cowboy's Hill" to Whitney.

He was the president of Amtrak then, and I was a BLE local chairman. The conversation was good and meaningful for me, then and now; and I continue to appreciate Mr. Claytor remembering me and taking the time to talk to me. Regardless of any mistakes he may have made at SOU, my respect for him never wavered and continues today.
