The SOU U33C's rarely ran after the merger and were mostly stored in Atlanta. The ex CR units never ran (getting only "NW" sublettering) and were stored until retired in 1985. All U33C's were traded in on C39-8's. 3 ex CR units were heavily rebuilt for a joint venture between Island Creek Coal and a Chinese firm and went directly to China.

The Southern Railway only owned ten U33C's (3805-3814) and they spent much of their careers in maintenance-of-way service. On a dreary morning, 3807 and 3812 are on a welded rail train at New Orleans.
