The XM734 MICV was a development of the M113 built by FMC and tested in 1966, with six built. It was replaced by the XM765 in 1967.

Ultimately, the Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle 70 (MICV 70) design study, completed in early 1968, concluded that a twelve-man armored vehicle was the optimal solution. This recommendation was accepted in January 1968 and the Army launched a program for a proof-of-concept prototype of the twelve-man XM723 MICV prototype.33
