SP 7399 is about to enter Tehachapi and crest the hill. SP 7399 is just north of Mojave and making better time than the line of pacers on the right.

7399 was released in Nov 1981, painted in yet another variation on the Daylight theme. This was closer to the Daylight paint we all know. SP Scarlet and Daylight Orange long hood, with a black roof, trucks, fuel tank, pilots and plows. The entire nose was painted all red, including the top, the sides and the front.

The SP; Southern Pacific, SD44R #7399 is a type of rebuild six-axle, 3,000 hp EMD diesel locomotive which was rebuilt from an SD45 #8837 with SD40-2 components and is the only one of its kind built in 1981. The locomotive itself is a variant of the SD45R.

SP SD44R page: SP 7399 - "Orange Bird" Daylight-inspired unit. The SP painted up two locomotives in variations of a Daylight-inspired scheme. One was SD40R SP 7342, the other was SD44R 7399. They became known as the "Orange Birds" and often were used to assist SP 4449, most notably on portions of her trip to New Orleans for the 1984 World's Fair.
