SP bought 3 experimental EMD 4200hp SD45X's #9500 - 9502, during 1970, and tested them for EMD in the Sierra's. These came painted in standard SP paint, and SP light packages.

The SD45 is a six-axle diesel-electric locomotive class built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between 1965 and 1971. It has an EMD 645E3 twenty- cylinder engine generating 3,600 hp (2,680 kW) on the same frame as the SD38, SD39, SD40, and SDP40. As of 2023, most SD45s have been retired, scrapped or rebuilt to SD40-2 standards.

The Southern Pacific purchased three SD45X from EMD in 1970 (SP 9500-9502) and tested them for EMD in the Sierra's over Donner Pass. The were delivered in full SP paint and equipment (standard headlight package, etc).

2009年6月12日 · EMD built three SD45X’s for the SP as their 9500-9502, and built three more to SP specs as EMD 4201-4203. If you look closely at the photo of 4202, you can see the SP nose lights and Nathan P3 horn along with the roof mounted bell.

SP 9504 is an EMD SD45X, SP Class EF642-2. Reportedly: it was built in 1971 to SP specifications as EMD 4202, builders number 36807. It was sold to Southern Pacific in 1972 becoming SP 9504.

I'm trying to compile and model all past and present SP Diesels. While I'm familiar with most models, the SD-45X with 4 roof fans eludes me. Was this a very limited experimental model just prior to introduction of the SD-50's and 60's? Or was this an SD-45 with increased horsepower from the 20 cylinder engine therefore the 4 fans?
