The first batch was created a long time ago, in the 2300s or 2400s, I believe. The second batch were created in the late 2400s (Halopedia should have more exact dates).

The Spartan Field Manual that was put out a few months ago actually talks about failsafes in case a spartan gets infected. I think its a plan codenamed CORRUPTER. Basically highly trained Spartan Hazop teams are deployed to contain the threat and the use of WMDs is authorized.
