If your master is too loud, it just gets turned down. If your master is too quiet, it gets turned up, and consequentially a limiter is added to catch the peaks. So normalization is only transparent if your track is louder, so it’s always better to err on the louder side.

Currently my track is mastered at -14 lufs integrated, however when I play it in my car or upload it to soundcloud at this volume, it is just entirely more quiet than any track i pull off Spotify. The music I am making works so much better loud so what should I do?

Aug 31, 2021 · Try putting a drum kit through a cranked saturator or distortion unit and look at how much it cuts down your transients. You've basically discovered compressors and limiters which are key aspects of dynamics and loudness for mastering. If you want to go the other way, get a compressor and set it to the fastest attack and biggest ratio you can.

Putting a limiter on the snare and squashing it a little can also help keep the level more consistent at different playback volumes. It's used in pop a lot, but may make the track sound too much like a sample for some rock.

And if you tune the woofer so it goes down to 20Hz, it's usually weaker at 40Hz (than it would be if it were optimized for 40Hz). You can get an SPL meter for less than $100 USD.

Apr 17, 2015 · A 15 will have issues producing 100Hz frequencies and 2400 Hz ones. If I use a sub, the top is a 12" or smaller. The 15s used to be used sub-less, except for my Unitys, which were 3 way tops (HF, 3-mid drivers, 15" woofer). 15s kill female voices (and some male ones) too much for my liking. YMMV.
