Spong Hill lies near the southern edge of the parish of North Elmham in central Norfolk, eastern England (Fig.1). The Anglo-Saxon cemetery occupied the same site as an earlier Roman farm, and two km to the east at Billingford there was a Roman settlement with an associated cemetery at the crossing of a Roman road and a small river, the Blackwater.
