2007年5月25日 · In April 1987, 5998 became one of the first FP45's repainted back to blue and yellow. When not hauling special trains, the FP45's toiled as regular freight locomotives. The unit behind FP45 5991 in the above photo is a 5250-class "SDF40-2," Santa Fe's designation for the 18 SDP40F's it acquired in a famous 1984 locomotive swap with Amtrak.

The 5998 and I believe that Amtrak locomotive were used on the California Operation Lifesaver special that ran thru out California in late April 1987. I don't believe any of the passenger cars seen in the photos were used on the special itself.

In August 1982, the 5948 was rebuilt at the Santa Fe shops in San Bernardino, CA, emerging as the 5998. In mid-1986, 5998 was painted in the short-lived red and yellow SPSF warbonnet scheme in anticipation of the Southern Pacific Santa Fe merger. Tom Jones photographed the unit shortly thereafter as it lead a two car special at Los Angeles, CA.
