SP received 4 orders of GP35's totalling 160 units over a two year period. Initially numbered directly after the GP30's, in the 1965 renumbering these were renumbered sequentially after the Cotton Belt (SSW) GP35's.

GP35 2879 still had its smoke lifters and snowshields when it was photographed at San Bernardino in 1986. In addition, the rear truck still has the big, boxy journals, a legacy of the FT's that Santa Fe traded in to EMD for the GP35's.

Got the replacement SoundTraxx Tsunami2 decoder in the mail this week and installed it in the Kato GP35. Nice to have this unit back in service!

Introduced in 1963, the 2500-horsepower GP35 was one of the last locomotives to feature EMDs 567 engine. The locomotives were used in mainline freight service by railroads across the continent, and, following remanufacturing, many are still in service today.

2025年3月24日 · Up for auction is a lightly run HO Athearn Southern Pacific GP-35 Powered Diesel Engine, in the Kodachrome paint scheme, with Road # 6606, manufacturer number 94212. This was just tested on a 2' piece of track in both directions and ran smooth with working directional lights.
