The class was a cut down version of his Lord Nelson class but also incorporated components from Urie and Maunsell's LSWR/SR King Arthur class. It was the last locomotive in Britain to be designed with a 4-4-0 wheel arrangement, and was the most powerful class of 4-4-0 ever produced in Europe.

The SECR L class was a class of 4-4-0 steam tender locomotive built for express passenger service on the South Eastern and Chatham Railway. Although designed by Harry Wainwright, they were built during the Maunsell era.

Due to the hangover from SE&CR days, most of the lines in Kent were of fairly light construction and would not take the weight of a modern express locomotive until well into the 1930s. Hence the extensive rebuilding (and new construction) of 4-4-0 designs at a time when other lines were busily building Pacifics or heavy 4-6-0s.

The Schools class was the last design of 4-4-0 locomotive to appear in this country and on the basis of the nominal tractive effort they were the most powerful 4-4-0 locomotives to be built in Britain. The whole class was named after public schools and the engines originally worked on the South Eastern section of the Southern Region.

Since their emergence from Ashford in 1901, the Wainwright Class D 4-4-0 locomotives had been the primary motive power on Kent Coast services, being the South Eastern & Chatham Railway’s first true express passenger design since its formation in 1899.
