柯尔特公司在m-16和m-4的基础上生产出了sr-15步枪，结合了二者步枪的优点。 因为15是民用版，美国的法律民用版的步枪只有点射和三连射。 没有全自动。

sr-16的名称是“m16斯通纳步枪”的意思，是sr-15的军用型，专门针对执法机构或军事用户生产，因此可进行半自动和全自动射击。 但使用典型的M16式机匣。
