Syrian IADS is well-equipped, but it is old and poorly maintained. Against close-range targets, Syrian IADS is still effective, as demonstrated by the shootdown of Turkish reconnaissance aircraft in July 2012. Against long-range targets, Syrian IADS is ineffective, as demonstrated by recent Israeli airstrikes near Damascus.

Syria has an IADS that is much more considerable than Qadda ’s feeble air defenses in 2011, but it is still a far cry from the sort of threat environment that U.S. airpower faced over North Vietnam or that Israel confronted in the October War of 1973.

Of all the Middle Eastern nations, Syria has one of the most robust SAM networks. Multiple SAM sites provide redundancy, allowing for overlapping coverage in many critical areas. It should come as no suprise that evidence of an illegal incursion into Syrian airspace by Israel was found in an area largely undefended by SAM systems.

Although destroying the SAF and its Integrated Air Defense System (IADS) in its entirety would require a major military operation, a series of relatively small strikes, using Precision Guided Munitions (PGMs) launched from outside the Weapon Engagement Zone (WEZ) of the Syrian IADS, would also significantly degrade the SAF and its infrastructure.
