2004年3月25日 · Simmons Hall, located at 229 Vassar Street, was designed by architect Steven Holl and dedicated in 2002. At the cost of $78.5 million, it is MIT’s most expensive dormitory built on campus since Baker House. It is 382 feet long and 10 stories tall, housing 350 undergraduates, faculty housemasters, visiting scholars, and graduate assistants.

The undergraduate residence is envisioned with the concept of “porosity.” It is a vertical slice of city, 10 stories tall and 382′ long, providing a 125 seat theater, a night café, and street level dining. The Simmons Hall dormitories for students are part of the expansion project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It is about connecting all the properties in one place and to become one of the university’s art world.

Designed by architect Steven Holl in collaboration with Perry Dean Rogers Architects, this ten-story dormitory for 350 undergraduate students and faculty is punctuated by terraces and atria and includes a computer cluster, fitness center, music rooms and street-level dining.

Driven by the underlying concept of “porosity,” Steven Holl’s 350-unit dormitory features a grand total of 5,538 windows dotted across the surface of the building. The tiny square apertures evoke the experience of pixels flitting across a digital screen.

It's been widely reported that Holl's inspiration for Simmons Hall came to him while he was in the bathtub washing himself with a sponge. This, I feel, is an apt metaphor for the entire design process. Steven Holl, in his bathtub, indulging his own desires, and seemingly oblivious to the issues that were of concern to others.
