The Sukhoi Su-15 (NATO reporting name: Flagon) is a twinjet supersonic interceptor aircraft developed by the Soviet Union. It entered service in 1965 and remained one of the front-line designs into the 1990s. [1] .

A simplified trainer version, the Su-15UT (NATO 'Flagon-C'), with no radar or combat capability, entered service in 1970. Initial delta wing Su-15s had poor take-off and landing characteristics, and so Sukhoi investigated a new wing design with extended wingtips (increasing wing area) and boundary layer control .

In the late sixties early seventies Sukhoi planned an updated version of the currant SU-15D (soon to be known as the SU-21E), that would feature such improvements as an increased wingspan with compound sweep, uprated engines, larger internal fuel capacity and much improved avionics including a new twin scan radar.
