Subbuteo was launched in March 1947. It was invented, manufactured and solely distributed by Peter A Adolph from his base in Langton Green, Tunbridge Wells, Kent. The first sets were sold by mail order, and also at events such as the 1947 "Schoolboys Own Exhibition".

With shortages still in place after the Second World War, and little experience, it was not an easy task. The origin story of Subbuteo's invention as told by Peter Adolph was that cheques/postal orders for 7s 6d came flooding in as a result of his initial advert while he was in America.
