Sumissie is the Sumikko version of the Japanese lake monster, Issie. It is said to live in the waters of Lake Ikeda, a freshwater lake in Japan. A large shadow on the surface of the lake that looks like a dinosaur. A photograph in the newspaper of Sumissie is the catalyst for the character's trip to the Corner Lake in the theme, Tokage and Mother.

Issie (イッシー, Isshī) is a Japanese lake monster said to lurk in Lake Ikeda. It is described as being saurian in appearance. The naming convention is analogous to "Nessie" (the Loch Ness Monster). According to mythology, Issie was a white mare who lived together with her foal on the shore of Lake Ikeda.
