Sutro Stewards promote recreation, conservation, and stewardship of Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve. Come out for a hike, volunteer project, and more!

The mission of the Sutro Stewards is to build community, connect people with nature, and protect and enhance Mount Sutro, one of the city’s wildest and most beautiful green spaces. We do this by working with volunteers to develop and maintain multi-use trails while conserving habitat for locally native plants and wildlife.

Volunteers will attend an orientation with Sutro Stewards staff to learn how to identify Bay Area native and invasive plants and their impact on our local environment. We will supply you with all the resources you need to learn about the plants around you.

Sutro Stewards offers educational talks and guided tours of Mount Sutro seasonally, including native plant hikes, wildflower walks, cultural and natural history tours, family hikes, and more.

At Sutro Stewards, she’s excited to deepen her understanding of San Franciscan native plants and learn all about seed saving, plant care, Mount Sutro ecology, habitat restoration methods, and local wildlife.

In 2020, Sutro Stewards started the process of developing our first conservation plan. The purpose of the Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve Conservation Plan is to outline a 30-year road map of what Sutro Stewards envisions for Mount Sutro and how we will get it done.

Our conservation program works to maintain, protect, and enhance native plant populations on Mount Sutro. We currently have over 3 main habitat restoration and conservation sites throughout the 61-acre open space, where we work to increase biodiversity and enhance wildlife habitat.

Promote team building within your organization by sharing in a service project on Mount Sutro. Contribute to habitat and trail improvements in the Mount Sutro Open Space, a significant resource for surrounding neighborhoods and for wildlife.
