The swift fox (Vulpes velox) is a small light orange-tan fox around the size of a domestic cat found in the western grasslands of North America, such as Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Kansas, Oklahoma [3] and Texas. [1] It also lives in southern Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta in Canada, where it was previously extirpated. [2]

SWIFT FOXES
Swift foxes are distinctive looking canids that live in the central and eastern Montana plains. Weighing only 5 pounds, they are half the size of a red fox and substantially smaller than a coyote.
Swift fox populations plummeted during the last half of the 18th century and the early 19th century as a consequence of widespread and indiscriminate poisoning that targeted wolves (Canis lupus). Trapping and shooting likely also took a heavy toll on fox.
