Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) is a mechanism defined by IEEE 802.3az to reduce power dissipation during periods of low packet traffic. For EEE to work, both the MAC and PHY must both support EEE functionality because signaling to enter and exit EEE LPI state is an IEEE standard (IEEE802.3az) that governs both Layer 1 and Layer 2 operations.
