Effective March 10, 2023, CA MUTCD 2014 Revision 7 (Rev 7), includes edits to provide uniform standards and specifications for all official traffic control devices in California pursuant to the provisions of California Vehicle Code Section 21400 and the recommendations of the CTCDC.

For traffic control requirements, refer to Section 12, “Temporary Traffic Control,” of the Standard Specifications and the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (California MUTCD). If a discrepancy occurs between the contract plans and specifications and the California MUTCD , the plans and specifications govern.

With the revision of Caltrans standard drawing T13 on October 18, 2019, Caltrans is promoting the use automated flagger assistance devices for one-way reversible lanes. These AFADs allow the flaggers operating them to remain safely off the roadway. Here is the text from the CA MUTCD (refer to the manual for original formatting).

The MUTCD is presented in six parts: (1) General; (2) Signs; (3) Markings; (4) Highway Traffic Signals; (5) Traffic Control Devices for Low-Volume Roads; (6) Temporary Traffic Control; (7) Traffic Control for School Areas; (8) Traffic Control for Railroad and Light Rail Transit Grade Crossings; and (9) Traffic Control for Bicycle Facilities.
