In 2009, the American Thyroid Association recommended total thyroidectomy for tumors >1 cm in contrast to the possibility of lobectomy for tumors ≤1 cm.

An important clinical question is whether patients with T1a tumors should be managed differently compared to patients with T1b tumors based on the expectation that patients with thyroid microcarcinomas have superior outcomes.
