It was designed with greater armor, a three-man hexagonal turret (similar to the T-34/85), modern torsion bar suspension and road wheels that featured internal shock absorption, which would improve its off-road capabilities. The regular T-34 used Christie suspension that had now become outdated and had a tendency to give a very uncomfortable ride.

However the T-43 fell short, as the T-34/85 modification was better suited for production in large quantities during the war and had good enough firepower, so the T-43 was not seen as the radical change needed to counter German armor.

As a direct successor of the T-34-85, the T-44 truly was a pioneering tank construction, paving the way for many modern Soviet tanks. It provides great mobility and a good degree of armour protection.

In 1948 development of the T44 was halted as the army increasingly focused on the new T65 cartridge as a replacement for the overpowered .30-06 round. The new 7.62mm round would be adopted by NATO in 1954 and the development of another prototype the T52, chambered in the new cartridge, was begun.

Sporting better agility, firepower, and armor than the T-43, it still plays very much as a flanking medium tank, using its low profile and excellent mobility to make up for its mediocre armor and poor gun penetration. The T-44 leads to the Object 430, and the T-54.

T44 is for athletes with movement affected at a low or moderate degree in one lower leg. They have unaffected knee joints allowing for controlled power delivery but they must focus harder to sense and grip the track surface whilst maintaining good running posture and symmetry.
