Early in 1984, it was announced that the Japanese Ground Self-Defence Force was to introduce the American 105 mm M735 APFSDS-T round for the Type 74 MBT, with prime contractor in Japan to be Daikin Industry.

The Type 74 was a mish-mash of design features taken from other country’s tanks. It had the British L7 105mm Rifled gun, the controllable suspension of the MBT70 and the rolled steel hull of the Leopard 1.

2001年6月1日 · The main armament consists of a 105mm rifled tank gun (based on the British Royal Ordnance L7 series and built under licence in Japan) which fires the standard range of ammunition. The Type 74's main armament was not fitted with a thermal sleeve initially, but a number of tanks are starting to receive them now.

The T-74 (Object 450) is a Soviet prototype main battle tank developed in 1971, it did not leave the mock-up phase, but brought some distress to NATO when they found out about it's supposed capabilities, especially for a vehicle developed in the early 1970s.
