A TAA Douglas DC-9-31 at Essendon Airport in 1971, wearing the 1964-1969 Whispering T-Jet colour scheme used exclusively on DC-9s and Boeing 727s. East-coast services were continually expanded and TAA soon earned its title as a true 'trans Australian' airline with services to Perth on the west coast of the continent, using Douglas DC-4 aircraft.

This aircraft was first flown on 24 August 1964 and arrived in Melbourne on 16 October 1964.
