The noise floor of the chrome is dramatically lower than the ferric-cobalt, and that difference yields better signal-to-noise values for the chrome tapes, which only improve as the delta noise in the ferric-cobalt increases over time.

2011年5月3日 · Both TDK and BASF polished their tapes to such a degree that in humid conditions they can squeal. In time, chrome tape loses as much as a decibel of output; but the noise also drops by the same amount, keeping the dynamic range the same.

Tapes made were the TDK SA, Maxell XL-II, and the BASF Chromium Dioxide. Some experimental Memorex CrO2 was released on the market, too. Today, some TDK SA lots suffer from white powder syndrome. The BASF version is the only EE tape with back coating, and are rare on the ground. The Maxell XL-IIs are the best of the lot.
