Someone suggested that the best matching filler material would come from another (junk) piston. Some say to remove rings and wrist pin before welding.

2014年7月18日 · Use to weld a little material to the underside of the valve reliefs. Expert tig man did the job and it wasn't very much welding. Did this on many JE flat tops in competition engines, no problems. Some of the tractor pulling folks use bolt-on domes.

2006年10月19日 · I will say that a buddy dropped a valve and holed a piston at an away race one weekend (1275cc Cooper S engine). The track welder Tig welded the hole in the piston - about an inch in diameter - and he put on a spare head and finished the weekend. Brian

Yes crowns are round, rest of piston has variable profiles, most oval at gudgeon pin holes. In addition to running welded pistons I have also tried cam (oval profile) grinding oversize pistons to fit smaller bores but after a few attempts gave up as they tended to nip up.

This is going in what was the first type diesel engine where rather than the fuel spraying down onto the piston it sprays across from one side the head to the other into a chamber and burns out of that.

2008年9月11日 · In some cases it would be an advantage to be able to build up a couple mm on the center of the piston crown to reduce head volume and increase compression. I figure this is fairly doable just by adding a pad of 5356 filler on the center of the piston crown and then turning it down on a lathe.
