Temperomandibular joint displacement, also known as internal disc derangement, is an abnormal relationship between the articular disc, the mandibular condyle and the mandibular fossa [1]. The most frequent displacement of the disc is anterior to the mandibular condyle however, in rare cases it can be posteriorly.

Articular disc - The articular disc is a fibrous extension of the capsule that runs between the two articular surfaces of the temporomandibular joint. The most common form of internal temporomandibular joint derangement is an anterior displacement of the articular disk in relation to the condyle. Often, joint pain and popping/clicking occur and the disk returns to normal position on jaw opening. Less frequently, the disk remains displaced and jaw opening is restricted.
