Wet, spring-fed fens blend into floodplain forest to create the globally-significant habitat known as Ives Road Fen Preserve! Fens are unusual and increasingly rare. The water from this fen flows through the thick grasses of the preserve, which help to filter the water before it empties into the River Raisin at the preserve's eastern edge.

Originally a showcase for wetland restoration, 7-Mile Fen now supports a diversity of wildlife. This preserve is located in the Crystal Springs complex, a mixture of tallgrass prairie and pothole habitat in the Prairie Coteau region.

Evans R. Beck Memorial Nature Preserve, commonly known as Beck Fen, is one of the few high-quality fens that remain of a once extensive wetland system. It was part of a network of fens in the upper watershed of Tinkers Creek within the Western Allegheny Plateau Ecoregion.

Prairie fens result when outwash plains, moraines, and ice ridges have increased hydraulic conductivity, forcing the groundwa-ter to the surface. The groundwater can form local springs or broad seeps or depressions around lake and stream edges. The wettest part of a prairie fen can have up to one foot of standing water.

See the start of Michigan's longest river as you walk through the beautiful wooded wetlands of the Grand River Fen Preserve. Native butterflies occur in very high abundance at the fen. This site has long been known by lepidopterists for its diversity of these beautiful insects.
