2023年8月11日 · The average TPA in most dogs is 23° to 29°. Some small breeds can have a higher-than-average TPA. Knowledge of an individual patient’s TPA can help guide treatment decision making. Dogs with a TPA greater than 30° may be poor candidates for conservative management, extracapsular suture stabilization, or tibial tuberosity advancement surgery.

In general, the TPA of RCCL dogs was 27.12° ± 0.62°, which was significantly higher (p < 0.001) than that of normal dogs (20.21° ± 0.32°), indicating that an increased TPA is associated with a higher risk for RCCL. Similar results were also observed among dogs with similar body weights, breeds, and ages for male and female RCCL dogs.

Average TPA in large breed dogs is reported to range from 23.5° to 28.0° (16, 20, 21); however, the TPA of individual dogs of various breeds has been reported to range from 12° to 59° (10, 22). Unlike the case with large breed dogs, CCL disease and risk factors for CCL disease in small breed dogs have not been extensively studied.

I currently recommend that ExCap suture stabilization be avoided in dogs when the TPA exceeds 30°. In order to properly position a patient for radiographic measurement of TPA, I advise heavy sedation or general anesthesia.
