Sep 24, 2014 · My group has been playing the same characters for about 3 years now, and I recently narrowly avoided an accidental TPK (total party kill). It was a combination of bad judgement and bad luck, but I fudged a few rolls to leave some of them alive. I would hate to have to start over after all this time!
Total Party Kill - What do I do as a GM?
If you don't want to have a TPK, don't use a system that can TPK. Seriously. If you're running something really storyline heavy that'll get totally derailed if everyone dies, use something like 4e D&D that has a lot of anti-character-death fail-safes built into the rules.

Oct 31, 2015 · Absolute favorite TPK was while I was playing my badass half-orc barbarian Kalthak. My party was deep in a dungeon and thought we had managed to hole up safely in room with just the one entrance. It was my turn to keep watch and up scurries a group of Cranium Rats. I immediately fail my will save and I'm dominated.

DM Advice: When is a TPK ok? : r/dndnext - Reddit
Mar 3, 2022 · A TPK should never be the result of a DM being overly brutal. Good DM's shouldn't plan to "play around" their player's abilities by building an encounter which makes the PC's helpless, but instead take advantage of the PC's mistakes. A TPK should be the result of the players either making missplays or blunders.
Has anyone ever used a TPK successfully to progress a campaign?
Yup, I played in a campaign where we had a TPK in Session 1 to kickstart the plot. After the TPK, as our characters were crossing over to the afterlife, we made a pact with something to keep reviving us when we got killed. Each time a character died, the revival DC became higher. It was a super brutal campaign, but fun!

Nov 17, 2022 · A TPK - especially a forced one - can be a real downer; starting the campaign with it may leave a bad taste in your players' mouths.
