Professor Tommy Lam received his BSc (Bioinformatics) and PhD (Molecular Virology) in The University of Hong Kong, and had postdoctoral training in Pennsylvania State University and University of Oxford. His main research interest is the evolution, epidemiology and ecology of infectious diseases.

Professor Tommy Lam won the Zhong Nanshan Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award (鍾南山青年科技創新獎) in 2023 for his contributions to scientific research and innovation. He was the first and only recipient from Hong Kong receiving the honour.
