This study describes a systematic approach to generate control signals of a tactile simulator to render the touch of textile fabrics. As a friction modulation tactile surface is used, control signals were generated from tribological measurements on real surfaces. Forces were acquired from an artificial finger, with a texture mimicking fingerprints.

We present a consolidated report on the current techniques on tactile rendering of textile materials. Existing research on tactile rendering focused on three significant areas: surface feature extraction, virtual texture simulation, and assessment by a human observer.

This goal implies two elements: i) to have an artificial finger representative of real fingers in terms of friction against fabrics, i.e. “an average finger”, ii) to measure friction at the interface between the finger and the tactile fabric.
