Sir Taraknath Palit (1831–1914) was an Indian lawyer from the Bengal Presidency and a philanthropist. [1] He was associated with the Swadeshi Movement during the Partition of Bengal and was one of the key figures behind the establishment of Ballygunge Science College of the Calcutta University and Jadavpur University .

The Palit Chair of Physics is a physics professorship in the University of Calcutta, India. [1] The post is named after Sir Taraknath Palit who donated Rs. 1.5 million to the university. The Nobel laureate physicist C. V. Raman was the first to be appointed to the post of Palit Professor of Physics in 1917.

Taraknath Palit was born in Calcutta. In 1871, after being called to the Bar, he returned from England and set up his legal practice. He was Chief Patron of the Society for Promotion of Technical Education that was established on 25 July 1906.
