2021年7月21日 · Tarn Hut is a small basic hut nestled deep within the Canterbury Foothills with a beautiful tarn right on its doorstep. In the winter over the time snow can be found on the summit of Lilburne Hill and the tarn outside Tarn Hut freezes over.

There are spectacular 360-degree views from Lillburn Hill over the foothill forests to Christchurch and the Port Hills beyond. Tarn Hut is a further 20 minutes along the spur south-west of Lillburn Hill. It is sited next to a small picturesque tarn in open alpine grassland.

Our intention was to head straight to Tarn Hut for the night and out via Youngman Stream. Once you cross in to the park boundary the track continues to follow the 4WD track, heading up a spur to point 1250m, it's a great climb and the views open up over the Puketeraki Range, Mt Oxford and Mt Richardson.

2019年11月22日 · It took us about 2.5 hours to reach Tarn Hut from Youngman Stream Hut. To be honest, motivated tramper could do it in an hour and half. Tarn Hut is really lovely, definitely on top of my list of Canterbury huts. It was surprisingly in good condition considering it was built in ’50s and that the environment up there in 1300m can get pretty harsh.

There are staggering views of the Canterbury Plains and, westward, over the ridge towards Puketeraki. From the hut a poled route ascends to the summit of nearby Lilburne Hill (1405m), the highest point on the ridge.

6 天之前 · It takes you to Tarn Hut (situated next to a small tarn) from Lees Valley Road. There are no bookings or fees required to stay at the Tarn Hut - first come, first served. It's a small basic hut with four bunk beds. The views along the way are spectacular, and a night at the hut is a worthwhile effort.

If you wanted to take the more relaxed approach, you could stay at both Tarn and Youngman Stream huts, making it a three day trip. (Also, replacing luxurious meals with a bit of dehy to ease the burden on the uphill sections could definitely simplify matters.
