Tao Xu, portrayed by William Gao, is a recurring character in Heartstopper and Nick and Charlie. He is best friends with Tara Jones, Aled Last, Isaac Henderson, Nick Nelson, Darcy Olsson, Charlie Spring, and Sahar Zahid, and is the boyfriend of Elle Argent.

Tao Xu is a main character in the first season of Netflix series Heartstopper. He is portrayed by William Gao. Tao is the “token straight friend” and part of Charlie’s support system at school. He is protective of Charlie and very skeptical of Nick (but soon grows to accept the rugby star).

He is known for his debut role as Tao Xu in the Netflix series Heartstopper (2022–present), for which he was nominated for a Children's and Family Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Performance. [2] Gao and his younger sister Olivia Hardy formed a music duo called Wasia Project in 2019. [3][4]
