The Grumman TBF Avenger (designated TBM [1] for aircraft manufactured by General Motors) is an American World War II-era torpedo bomber developed initially for the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and eventually used by several air and naval aviation services around the world.

2019年1月7日 · The TBM-3R variant was first used operationally in July 1951 off the coast of Korea. The Avenger was modified to carry 6 passengers by removing the rear gun turret, adding seats between the turret and pilot, and adding seats in the lower rear section of the aircraft.

Grumman designed the TBM-3R, “carrier on board delivery” a/c which took advantage of the new large empty fuselage space. 7 passenger seats were mounted there, along with a newly designed bomb bay cargo basket.

The latter were TBM-3R Avengers, used to carry plutonium cores for atomic bombs from bases in the Mediterranean to carriers. The last Avengers in an active Navy squadron were the TBM-3E variant in antisubmarine squadron 27, which were grounded in October 1954- They flew on with the reserves until early 1956.

During the Korean War, a number of TBM-3s and TBM-3Ws were converted to the "TBM-3R" configuration, with all combat gear removed, the rear of the canopy glassed-in or faired over, and seats for seven passengers installed in the rear compartment.

The Grumman TBF Avenger is the well-remembered, massive WW2 US Navy torpedo bomber of the USN. It was also at the time the largest and heaviest single-engine aircraft of the war. It forged an enviable reputation as the main stick of the fleet carrier force in 1942-45, insturmental in the Pacific Campaign.

In July 1954, for example: Although one mission proposed for the multipurpose Douglas AD-5 was COD, the TBMs were all replaced in the Navy VR squadrons by the Grumman TF-1 (C-1) by January 1957.

Carrying up to six passengers, and cargo or stretchers in the bomb bay. Built out of the box using kit decals of VR-23 operating in Korea 1952.
